Health care reform has left many consumers questioning exactly how the individual health insurance mandate is going to work and more importantly how it’s going to affect them.  Ezra Klein on WashtingtonPost.com gives some details in his article “How Does the Individual Mandate Work”.

This mandate for health insurance requires that all individuals who can afford health insurance purchase a minimal coverage policy.  The policy shouldn’t cost more than 8% of their monthly income and the person would need to make more than the poverty line.  People who cannot afford health insurance will receive subsidies that make health insurance virtually free.

This mandate will not affect most Americans who are already covered through their employer or already carry individual health insurance policies, but those going through life taking the gamble that they won’t need health care will need to change their thinking.  They will need to purchase a policy or pay a fine.  By 2016, it will be a $695 fine a year or 2.5% of income, whichever is higher.  Start getting quotes now to ensure you have quality health insurance at an affordable price.
