Your college student came home for the holidays, and wanted to take the car back to campus. Before you send you agree, here are a few things to consider.

Away at school auto insurance discount

If your child’s school is a significant distance from home, you could save money by keeping the car at home. Many auto insurance companies offer an “away at school” discount if a child rated on your policy is away at college. There are some distance restrictions; with my current insurance carrier the college has to be at least 120 miles away from home. My daughter qualified, but my son did not.

You should also have the vehicle rated at its new garaging address.

When a news reporter quips, “The accident is being blamed on the recent snow storm…” it always gets a chuckle out of me. If you are in an accident, and did the hitting, you are at fault. Road conditions certainly play a role in many accidents, but it is up to you as the driver to adapt to those conditions and safely operate your car. The snow may contribute to your accident, but it was caused by you over-driving the conditions and losing control of your vehicle.

What if you have to evacuate and leave a car behind to face nature’s fury? Are you covered?

Another police car rolls down the street, urging you to evacuate. You have loaded all the vital papers and family pictures into the van, and your wife is in the passenger seat urging the kids to buckle up. It is time to leave, and as you back out of the drive you realize there are two cars left behind. “I hope I’m covered…” runs through your mind as you join the line of evacuees on the slow march to higher ground.

Whether your state calls it DWI, DUI, or DUII, drunk driving is dangerous not only for the driver but also for passengers, other drivers, pedestrians, and property. And driving drunk with a child in the car, who has no choice but to be there, should be treated as a serious crime.

Leandra’s Law

New York evidently felt this way in December 2009 when the state passed Leandra’s Law, which made it a felony to drive under the influence with a child under 15 years old in the car.
