A Lake County, Calif. woman is now behind bars after collecting workers’ compensation while she owned and operated her own business.
Nicki Lee Buxmann, 48, owned and operated the TNT Takeover/MMA Boxing gym in Roseville, Calif., although she had previously been injured while working as a letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service.
Buxmann told the Department of Labor on multiple occasions that she was not working or receiving an income while she owned the gym, yet an undercover agent caught her teaching defensive tactics techniques, replacing light bulbs, cleaning windows, and sweeping exercise mats.
Buxmann pleaded guilty in January and was sentenced in late August to five months in jail followed by five months of home detention and 36 months of supervised release. S

An article in the American Economic Review finds that small businesses have been over-paying for health insurance. The article “Unhealthy Insurance Markets: Search Frictions and the Cost and Quality of Health Insurance” highlights the difficulties small employers have in searching for health insurance. The difficulties of comparison shopping increase average health insurance premiums paid by small businesses by 29 percent.
